RWE's Sofia Offshore Wind farm, off the North East coast, is being fitted with 150 composite recyclable blades.
RWE and turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa are claiming the wind farm at Dogger Bank is the first large-scale installation of recyclable blades at a UK offshore wind farm.
At 1.4GW maximum installed capacity, Sofia is one of RWE’s largest offshore wind farms currently in construction. It is located on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea.
They have so far fitted half the blades, with installation continuing throughout the rest of the year.
The rotor blades are made with a resin that allows the various materials to be easily separated and recycled into other products at the end-of-life, such as bike helmets and suitcases.
The project is being fitted with Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 turbines that have 108m-long turbine blades and a 222m rotor diameter.
Once fully constructed and aiming for a target operational date of 2026, Sofia will be capable of generating enough renewable electricity to power ~1.2mln typical UK homes once fully operational.
