NatureScot is Scotland’s nature agency, and the SPBM is an adaptation of the English statutory biodiversity metric to better fit the Scottish environmental and policy context. The SPBM is expected to provide a more consistent and transparent approach for developers to demonstrate significant biodiversity enhancement.
The consultation runs until 30 November 2026, and is hosted on the Commonplace platform. The user guide, calculation tool, and habitat condition assessment sheets, alongside a Word form listing all questions, can be found on the NatureScot SPBM consultation webpage.
NatureScot welcomes views from anyone with an interest in the SPBM, including those with technical knowledge and experience of biodiversity metrics. Once the consultation period has ended, NatureScot will be reviewing all responses and refining the metric toward releasing version 1 in spring 2027.
Please share this message with any groups, organisations, or individuals who you think may wish to respond to the consultation. If you have any further questions, please contact NatureScot's SPBM team at ScotBioMetric@nature.scot.
